High School Extracurricular Activities
Here I discuss the activities I did in high school. If you think what I did was cool, hopefully you can find an organization like it at your school – or better yet, you can start it if there’s not!
Pieces: Literary Magazine
I wrote for the literary magazine as well as worked on the staff. As part of the staff, I helped design the pages, selected which submissions would be in the magazine, and defended any ‘questionable’ material that the principal may have flagged.
- Years Participated: 2004-2008
- Leadership Roles: Assistant Editor-in-Chief (2006-07), Editor-in-Chief (2007-08)
Students United for Respect & Equality (SURE)
We put on three shows a year featuring student performers. Yes, those high school garage bands got to play for the school. As part of SURE, we advertised for the shows as well as organized and set up for the events. We also participated in an event at a local university attended by other SURE Clubs that promoted increased tolerance and understanding of others. My school’s club was the only one to produce a student-run seminar at this event.
- Years Participated: 2004-2008
- Leadership Roles: Public Relations (2005-07), Co-President (2007-08)
Science League
We participated in interscholastic science competitions. We had for Science League competitions per year, and we also competed in a contest held at a nearby university as well as a state-wide competition once a year.
- Years Participated: 2005-2008
- Leadership Roles: President (2007-08)
National Honor Society (NHS)
NHS is (obviously) a national organization of students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and service. Eligibility may vary by school, and one must apply to be inducted. As a member, I participated in community service events. When I was an Executive Board member, I did a lot of behind-the-scenes work in organizing the selection of new members and preparing for the induction ceremony.
- Years Participated: 2006-2008
- Leadership Roles: Executive Board (2007-08), Co-Chair of Induction & Selection (2007-08)
Students Against the Violation of the Earth (SAVE)
SAVE is my high school’s environmental club. We recycled. We also promoted being environmentally friendly by having information sessions, and held an Earth Day event.
