Tips for Yummier Eating
Now I am no nutrition guru, but I do know when college food starts to taste bland, repetitive, or just plain bad. Unfortunately, if you’re on a typical meal plan, it may be hard to ignore mediocre foods. After a year of the dining hall (and no more for me, thank you), I’ll share a few tidbits that I discovered that maybe you will enjoy too.
Check out the salad bar.
Hopefully your school will have a decent salad and fruit selection, because otherwise your diet may be pretty poor (which is something coming from me, since I don’t like to eat fruits and veggies). If there’s nothing good available for the main course, make a big salad! Or, you can steam your veggies in the microwave (if available). Load up that broccoli in a bowl, add a TEENY bit of water, cover it with another bowl, and microwave for about a minute. Just don’t burn yourself.
Make a nice sandwich.
Find some meat, toss on some lettuce and tomato (good ol’ salad bar again!), and put it all between some bread. My school had a sandwich/wrap bar every day, which was actually quite good. I tended to grab some grilled chicken from the grill area and throw on some lettuce and cheese if there was nothing appealing at any particular meal.
Add some excitement to your pasta.
Speaking of grilled chicken, I would cut it up and add it to my pasta. Back at the salad bar, I would put some veggies into the mix. Then, I’d sprinkle some parmesan cheese, and I would have a slightly more exciting meal.
Points to keep in mind:
- The salad bar may be your very best friend.
- Check out what your dining hall or cafeteria offers every day, and try to mix and match the items for more variety.
- Sometimes you have to get creative. Use your resources!

I remember gaining weight when I went to participate in a program that took place at a college. Even though I didn’t eat a lot, the cookies totally threw me off.
